Locality

Attractive villages are scattered in and around this area. Newholm is a peaceful village, yet just minutes away from local tourist attractions – North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway at Grosmont, (used in the Harry Potter film). A length of Roman Road crosses the moor, and the ‘Lilla Cross’ is stated to be the oldest Christian monument in the North of England. Goathland, a beautiful village, home to Aidensfield in the popular ‘Heartbeat’ series. Sandsend with its 3 mile stretch of golden, sandy beaches. Whitby has been voted one of the top tourist attractions. The East and West side of Whitby is spanned by a swing bridge. The Historic Abbey home of the 7th century Abbess, St Hilda, this inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. The interesting St Mary’s Church, which is reached by the famous ‘199’ steps. The ‘Magpie’ café (Rick Stein’s best place for fish and chips). Many of the streets of Whitby and the surrounding area are immortalised in the photography of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, these can be seen in a gallery on the West side.
Whitby Jet is also a lovely souvenir. Fossil hunting is organised via the Tourist Information Centre during the summer months. There are many festivals, including, the Regatta, Folk week etc, and local agricultural shows during the summer months. The replica of Captain Cook’s ship, the Endeavour makes many visits to the port. The house where Captain James Cook lived during his time in Whitby is now a museum, and is the only building left standing, (all the other properties, where he lived, have at some time been demolished). History is second to none in the Archives. Whitby’s amenities include. Museums, art galleries, library, golf, seasonal theatre, sports centre and swimming pool, mini golf and bowling. We have three supermarkets, along with out of town smaller shops, for your provisions. Other attractions nearby include: cycle hire, fishing lake, fishing river, fishing sea, garden centres, gift shops, pony or donkey rides, pick your own fruit or vegetables in season, sailing, surfing, hard tennis court, singing / dancing / talent evenings. ‘The Green’ Cottage

‘The Green’, at Newholm Green, is a lovely old stone built semi detached cottage, white washed, with red pan tiles, situated at the end of a cul-de-sac, so is the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle whilst being a short journey away from the sea-side resort. Double glazed and thermostatic controlled electric radiators through-out. The cottage is over 2 storeys, lovingly refurbished to provide comfortable, well equipped accommodation for a maximum of six guests. Ceiling spotlights are in each room. The water is heated by an immersion heater, controlled by a 24hr timer. The doors are all natural wood, to add to the rural feel of this cottage. All electricity, bed linen and towels are included in the hire charge. All the beds are made up ready for your arrival. I provide a small amount of tea/coffee/sugar and milk for your arrival. ‘The Green’ Cottage - as you enter via the back door, you step into the spacious, part tiled kitchen / dining area. The large fully fitted kitchen has numerous fitted units; the tall unit houses the ironing board, vacuum cleaner and cleaning utensils. There are 4 large windows, one of which on the horizon, you can see the North Sea. Included in the kitchen is a dishwasher, microwave, fridge with ice box, full sized electric cooker with 4 hot plates and cooker hood, accompanied by stainless steel pans, with sufficient cooking utensils also a kettle and toaster. There is a full co-ordinated compliment of crockery, and cutlery, along with wine glasses. The oblong pine table and 6 chairs all add to the homely feel of this kitchen. A charming feature in the kitchen is the exposed original Yorkshire stone wall. The flooring in the kitchen is easy clean, non-slip vinyl. As you enter the fully carpeted lounge, there are 2 settees and large footstool, plus a colour, remote control flat screen T.V with DVD, and free-sat. A selection of coffee tables is also there for you. A small original window looks into the dining area of the kitchen and the large window looks out over the garden towards the fields of Newholm. A selection of ‘boxed games’ are provided for you, along with leaflets of activities etc in and around the area. The bathroom is partly tiled out with white and blue tiles. The white bathroom suite has an electric shower fitted over the bath, with a glass shower screen and there is an electrically heated towel rail. Storage units are in the bathroom and it too also has one exposed wall in original Yorkshire stone. The flooring in the bathroom is easy clean, non-slip vinyl. On the ground floor, the spacious double bedroom again is fully carpeted out. The double wardrobe, large chest of drawers and bedside cabinets are all finished in a pale cream colour.
The chaise longue adds a touch of relaxation. Co-ordinated bedding adds to the country feel of this bedroom. The excellent quality double bed has storage drawers underneath. The bedroom also benefits from a large window which also looks out over the garden towards the fields of Newholm. Now climb the stairs to the two bedrooms. The spacious double bedroom has original floorboards varnished to compliment the ‘country feel’ of this cottage. The double bed has a memory foam mattress, with storage underneath. There is an antique pine dressing table and chest of drawers, with 2 bedside cabinets, this all adds to the homely feel of the bedroom. There is adequate hanging space in the built-in wardrobe. The large window looks out over the country side, and to the left of the window, you can see the North Sea. Again co-ordinated bed linen adds to the country feel of this large bedroom. As you move across the stairs to the other spacious bedroom, it also has the original floorboards varnished to compliment the ‘country feel’ of this cottage. The two single beds have storage underneath and the double wardrobe has ample hanging space, with a drawer underneath. The 2 bedside units compliment the bedroom and there is also a chest of drawers. The large window looks out over country side with the North Sea visible to the left. Again, co-ordinated bed linen accessorizes this twin bedroom. Back downstairs, and to the front of the cottage you will find a delightful garden room, where you can take in the view towards Newholm, or open the door to enjoy the garden, lawn at one side, and flower tubs on the other side of the path, with garden furniture for your alfresco eating. The garden room is fully carpeted and furnished out with chairs and a coffee table. There is ample space for suit-cases and storage under the stairs and at the gable end of the cottage is a large garage exclusively for you to park your vehicle. The Surrounding Area ‘The Green’ at Newholm Green, is situated at the end of a single track road, which is a cul-de-sac. With open fields and countryside around the cottage. This is a secluded area with Mulgrave Castle nearby. On the footpath from the cottage towards Sandsend is the exclusive Raithwaite Hall. Newholm in its origin was an Anglian settlement, surrounded by an oval shape of Danish farm-steads and clearings. In King William 1st Doomsday book it was recorded as “Neuecham”. Miss Linskill, the celebrated Whitby novelist lived in a cottage towards the bottom of Newholm, now known as “Cleveden Cottage”. The village of Newholm is a pretty little village located in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. The village has a pond and ‘The Beehive Inn’, a public house situated in the middle of the village. ‘PennyClare’ is new to Newholm, with a shop with tea room and a “barn full of everything gorgeous”.
